DeKalb PD identifies gunman in club shooting – CHAMBLEE, Ga.

March 3, 2014 – DeKalb County police have identified the suspect in a shooting involving officers outside a Chamblee night club.

Witnesses told Channel 2’s Steve Gehlbach the shooting happened Sunday night during an album release party at the Velvet Room. The suspect has been identified as Ronald Robinson, 39. He’s been charged with two counts of aggravated assault against a law enforcement officer.

Investigators said two uniform officers were working off-duty security at the Velvet Room heard gunshots at the back of the club. Police said when they came outside, Robinson turned and fired at them. They returned fire and hit Robinson, the party’s DJ, in the leg. Police said Robinson tried to get away.

“He was able to get up from his injuries and go inside the club. The officers found him inside injured and took him into custody,” said DeKalb County Police Chief Cedric Alexander.

Gehlbach saw several cars in the parking lot with bullet holes and shell casings on the ground.

The club was hosting an album release party with VIPs like rapper Rick Ross and producer Sean “Diddy” Combs. Police did not say whether the stars were there at the time of the shooting, but they don’t believe the shooting had anything to do with the artists.

DeKalb County police said the officers involved in the shooting were not injured.
